Timeline after timeline after goddamn timetime to make the best possible outcome happen for Shinji, for the person he loves more than anything in the world, that has driven him to repeat and repeat events over and over again after countless failures, he finally had a foolproof plan that took 14 years in the making.

And it went horribly wrong anyways.

And he still smiles for Shinji, still tells him it’ll be OK, fucking apologizes for his failure even when he’s knocking on death’s door, and then dies.

And we definitely know he’ll wake up in another timeline to start over yet again, and probably fail that one too.
